Meet this year's 2010 Architectural Portfolio jury.

Patrick Brosnan, AIA, LEED AP, REFP

During his 22-year career, Patrick has played a pivotal role in growing Legat Architects’ K-12 education practice to achieve national recognition with a portfolio that encompasses more than 350 schools. Patrick has provided planning and design services for 50 educational clients, and helped school districts win approval of $600 million in bonds. With a focus on learning styles and performance-based design, he contributes regularly to national publications, and speaks about educational topics on local, regional and national levels.

Patrick is president of America’s Schoolhouse Council, a national consortium of architects aimed at achieving excellence in education facility planning and design. He led a planning committee for the AIA Committee on Architecture for Education’s 2010 School Building Expo. He is a Recognized Educational Facility Planner (REFP), designated by the Council of Educational Facility Planners International (CEFPI). Patrick holds a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Brian Minnich, AIA, LEED AP

Brian’s career has concentrated on the planning and design of K-12 education structures and spaces since achieving several top honors and Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Science in Environmental Design degrees from North Dakota State University in 1998.

Licensed in the states of Washington and Maryland, his public, independent and charter school facilities experience spans the northwest and mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. In addition to organizing and managing the firm’s in-house credit classes, including the Rubeling EDU information-access program for education clients, Brian also volunteers for the AIA Committee on Architecture for Education (CAE) subcommittee focusing on pre-K to grade 12.

Brian believes a successful project "reaches a balance of all design considerations through complement rather than compromise."

Randall Wray Richardson

Director of Facilities Planning and Construction, Asbury College, Wilmore, Ky.

At Asbury College, Randall is responsible for assisting the facilities master planning, preliminary CAD design and oversight of capital construction projects from program statement to occupancy.

His career with the college began in 1976 when he was a carpenter and electrician. Over the years, he has held other titles with the college, including assistant director of facilities and director of physical plant, where he was active in the facilities master-planning process of the campus.

The campus facilities include more than 850,000 square feet and about 100 acres in the main campus, additional farm areas of more than 600 acres, buildings circa 1910 to present. He is responsible for a staff of 35 to 40.

From 2006 to 2008, he worked with architect Sherman Carter Barnhart PSC (Lexington, Ky.) as a construction administrator.

Mark Stein, PE

Coordinator of Facilities, North Penn School District, Lansdale Pa.

Mark leads the North Penn facilities team in providing safe, clean and healthful learning environments in the suburbs of Philadelphia. With the help of 140 employees, he serves the building maintenance, custodial operations and grounds-management needs of 21 buildings covering 2 million square feet on 482 acres.

North Penn is in the midst of a capital-improvement program, renovating a school per year with a focus on increasing energy efficiency, integrating sustainable technologies, standardizing building systems and improving indoor air quality. Mark spearheads the district’s indoor air quality program, which earned the EPA’s National Excellence Award in 2009.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Delaware and a master’s degree in project management from the University of Maryland.

Prior to joining North Penn, Mark served in the Civil Engineer Corp of the U.S. Navy, where he was involved in construction project management; facility planning and design; and facility maintenance operations around the world.
