The Library Media Center and Faculty Administration Building at Peninsula College, Port Angeles, Wash., completed in August 2008, creates a gateway to the campus. Linked by a pedestrian bridge and spacious courtyard, the building offers stunning views of the Olympic Mountains and the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

The 27,150-square-foot library media center features a state-of-the-art computer classroom, two conference rooms, six student study rooms and comfortable reading areas. The two-story, 7,500-square-foot Faculty Administrative Building includes two conference rooms and administrative offices for 27 faculty and staff.

Building treatments of brick, glass and steel merge the buildings into the campus environment, and link the new and modern with older existing buildings.

The building was built to meet or exceed LEED silver standards. Rainwater from the roofs and paved surfaces is diverted to rain gardens, visibly located and incorporated into the sustainable landscaping design. Geothermal wells harvest energy to power the heating and ventilation systems. Natural light and passive solar skylights enhance the interior spaces. A raised floor, working as an air plenum, provides under floor air distribution.

The architect is Schacht Aslani Architects (Seattle).
