Meet the 2011 Educational Interiors Showcase Jury

Khadijah Brown, AIA, LEED AP

Director, Facilities Management, Boston Public Schools

Khadijah is at the helm of the first school district in the nation. With a rich diversity of school buildings, ranging in age from 4 years to more than 116 years, Boston Public Schools (BPS) has 135 school buildings with more than 11 million square feet of space. Facilities Management has an annual operating budget of $47 million and an annual capital budget from $35 to $50 million per year with a total of 500 employees, from custodians to environmental inspectors to licensed electricians.

She holds numerous memberships within the architectural community: architectural registrations in Washington D.C. and Commonwealth of Massachusetts and as LEED Accredited Professional with USGBC. Both her Bachelor of Science and Masters of Architecture degrees are from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Larry W. Diehl

Principal/Architect, ACI/Frangkiser Hutchens Architects/Planners/Interior Designers; Offices in Kansas City, Mo.; Leawood, Kan.; and St. Louis

Larry has more than 41 years of experience in the architectural profession—with 31 years dedicated to education facilities. Larry is an owner in the firm, which specializes in education facilities, having completed more than 2,500 projects, more than 30 million square feet, and more than $3 billion worth of construction. He has handled all aspects of architecture, and has been responsible for projects ranging from a few thousand dollars to more than $135 million. Larry's experience includes programming, master planning, design, scheduling, budgeting and detailed project development.

Larry received his Bachelor of Architecture Degree from the University of Kansas, Lawrence, and maintains registrations practicing in 12 states.

Gene Woodard

University of Washington, Seattle, Director of Building Services Division

Gene Woodard has been the Director of Custodial Services at the University of Washington, Seattle, for 25 years, and is currently the Director of Building Services Division at the University of Washington, which includes Custodial Services and Recycling and Solid Waste programs.

He is a Registered Executive Housekeeper and member of the International Executive Housekeeping Association (IEHA) for which he is a past president (2000-2002); the International Sanitary Supply Association (ISSA); and the Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers (APPA).

The University of Washington Custodial Department has a long history of cleaning for health and providing a safe environment while using the safest products and procedures available. The UW recently was the first university to use ICM (Integrated Cleaning and Measurement) to begin the process of validating cleaning procedures within its facility. The UW Custodial Services team was recognized for its Green Cleaning Program by AS&U by earning the Grand Green Cleaning Award for Universities and Colleges in 2007 and again in 2010.
