Meet the jurors in this year's Architectural Portfolio competition.
The 2008 Architectural Portfolio jury: Rappold, Perkins, Bradley, Randolph and Johnson.
Bill Bradley, AIA, LEED, REFP
Vice President, SHW Group, Charlottesville, Va.
Bill manages SHW Group's new Charlottesville, Va., studio, which is dedicated to pursuing the Living Building Challenge. Before returning to private practice, he was an assistant professor of education at the University of Virginia, where he helped direct an interdisciplinary research initiative examining educational best practices in light of advances in multiple fields. Through his understanding of the relationships among education, architecture and sustainable technologies, he works with leaders in education to foster better learning environments.
Bill is president of the Virginia chapter of the Council of Educational Facility Planners, International (CEFPI) and an active member of the American Institute of Architects' Committee on Architecture for Education (AIA-CAE).
Lisa K. Johnson, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP
Principal, Principal of Higher Education Design, DLR Group, Seattle
Lisa has 15 years of education design leadership experience. Throughout her career, she has focused primarily on the planning and design of K-12 and higher-education facilities for public and private clients. She has a bachelor of architecture degree from Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, and is active in DLR Group's national Higher Education Forum, where she shares her passion for creating inspiring learning environments. Lisa helped create and strongly advocates a highly collaborative and interactive planning process that analyzes challenges and responds to the goals, aspirations and needs of stakeholders.
Lisa is a member of the Cascadia branch of the U.S. Green Building Council, the AIA-CAE, the Society of College and University Planners (SCUP), CEFPI, and the Association for Women in Architecture (AWA).
David Perkins
Assistant Physical Plant Director, Maryville College, Maryville, Tenn.
David has worked with Maryville College for eight years. During this time, the college has undergone nearly $36 million in renovations and $67 million in new construction. He has been involved with bringing in and overseeing the college's green-cleaning and recycling programs, and standardizing facility materials.
David is a member of the Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers (APPA) and the Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association (TICUA), and is a TICUA EPA peer auditor.
Dennis J. Randolph
Physical Plant Manager, Roseburg Public Schools, Roseburg, Ore.
Dennis has been involved with public school facility management for more than 23 years. He was the director of facilities for Selah (Wash.) School District for more than 18 years, the director of maintenance and operations for Yakima (Wash.) School District for 2½ years, and has been the physical plant manager for Roseburg (Ore.) Public Schools since 2007.
Dennis is former president of the Washington Association of Maintenance and Operations Administrators and the National School Plant Management Association (NSPMA). He is an Educational Facilities Master, a Certified Playground Safety Inspector, and an Asbestos Inspector and Management Planner. He also has served on committees for the Washington Association of School Administrators, the Washington Association of School Business Officials and the Washington State Energy Office.
Todd Rappold
Superintendent, Miami East Local Schools, Miami County, Ohio
Todd has been a superintendent for this rural Ohio school district for five years. He has 18 years of prior experience as a building administrator, teacher, athletic director and coach.
Todd coordinated the construction of a 165,000-square-foot middle school in Sidney, Ohio; facilitated the completion of a 160,000-sqaure-foot elementary and junior high school project; and is beginning the planning and design phase for a new high school. He has a bachelor's degree from Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio; a master's degree from Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio; and is enrolled in the doctoral program at the University of Dayton, Ohio.
He has received the Ohio Association of Elementary School Administrators' hall of fame school award. He was chosen for an exemplary employee award in the Springfield City School District, Springfield, Ohio.
