Grants to Bring Less-Polluting School Buses

Six school districts in Ohio have received grants to install idle-reduction equipment on school buses.

The grants will enable the districts to outfit a total of 100 school buses with the equipment that will reduce student and driver exposure to pollutants.

The $277,862 in grants comes from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Ohio EPA.

The districts receiving funds: Harrison Hills City Schools, 34 buses; North Royalton City Schools, 23 buses; Fort Frye Local Schools, 15 buses; Liberty Union-Thurston Local Schools, 13 buses; Minerva Local Schools, nine buses; Shaker Heights City Schools, six buses.

Since Ohio’s school bus retrofit program began in 2006, more than 450 school buses have been equipped with idle-reduction technologies.
