Project File: Resource center

Sep 1, 2003 12:00 PM

The philosophy behind creating a Learning Resource Center at Chesapeake College, Wye Mills, Md., was to build a library that would become part of campus life.

In 1998, a campus plan identified a new library as the college's most pressing need. Aside from a performing-arts facility, the resource center is the first new building to be added to the campus in 25 years.

The 45,000-square-foot facility opened in August 2002, serving 2,400 students on three campuses and via distance-learning programs. The resource center features three meeting and conference rooms, 150 computer stations, study rooms and lounges, cyber cafe, and stacks for book and periodical collections. The resource center also acts as a public library for the community.

“With its dramatic open spaces, large window walls, and nighttime lighting design, it is a beacon to students and passersby that Chesapeake College has made a new commitment to its students, faculty and community,” says Patricia Cheek, library director and dean of academic support services.

Architects for this project are CSD Architects and Davis Brody Bond (Baltimore).
