Construction Zone: Stepping up

A 25,478-square-foot expansion at Ocean View High School, Huntington Beach, Calif., added six buildings that feature six new science labs, 11 classrooms, support space, landscape and hardscape.
The east side of the $13.8 million expansion includes three, single-level buildings that primarily support the science department. The west side includes three, two-level structures with a mezzanine and a below-grade level, which house the English department, utilities and support services. A new elevator and ramps allow for accessibility among multi-level buildings.
The new science laboratories, which replace those that are being converted into classrooms, are ADA-compliant and provide ample storage capacity. The new classrooms have state-of-the-art technology for computer applications, including computer-ready LCD projectors and screens to enhance instruction.
A new central energy-management system controls air conditioning and heating throughout the entire campus. Additionally, the project includes environmentally friendly features such as a single-ply reflective roof and operable window systems.
The architect is Y'Deen/Associates, Architects (Brea, Calif.). McCarthy Building Companies (Newport Beach, Calif.) provided construction-management services for the project.
