Enrollment shifts to charters as student numbers at traditional schools decline

Hundreds of students in Michigan will be attending the 37 new charter schools opening in the fall across the state in 2013-14. The Detroit News says enrollment in traditional public schools has fallen in Michigan over the past two decades, but charter school enrollment has increased more than 500 percent since the state's first one opened in the mid-1990s. More than 130,000 children attended 277 charter schools in 2012-13.
