Buena Vista (Mich.) district may be able to reopen schools by Friday

May 15, 2013
Michigan officials may approve new deficit-reduction plan and release funds to the struggling district.

Students in the Buena Vista (Mich.) School District could be back in classrooms as early as Friday. The Saginaw News reports that Michigan Department of Education officials are checking over the district's third attempt at a deficit-elimination plan. Board president Randy L. Jackson says if the state approves the plan, it could release funds to reopen the district. Students haven't been in school since May 3. Buena Vista officials laid off all but three employee and shut schools down because they weren't going to be able to make the May 24 payroll. Meanwhile, the district has decided not to establish a voluntary skills camp that would have gotten students back in a learning environment until the district could reopen.
