Donations will help Detroit revive music, art and sports programs in elementary and middle schools

District is receiving more than $500,000 to restore programs that were cut years ago

More than $500,000 in donations and a fund-raising effort for the Detroit school system will help restore long-gone music, art and sports programs in elementary and middle schools as soon as next month. The Detroit Free Press says the UAW-Ford National Programs Center will provide $355,000, the Ford Motor Company Fund is donating $118,000, and the Detroit Public Schools Foundation will give $60,000 to support the initiative. The programs will cost an estimated $1.2 million a year, so the district is working with other partners and will spend non-general fund dollars to provide the rest.
