Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., says 24 team members were involved in hazing and underage drinking.

Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., has cancelled the spring soccer season of its men's team because of hazing and underage drinking.

A letter from college president Philip Glotzbach says the school has begun disciplinary proceedings against 28 students--24 of them team members--in connection with a off-campus team initiation on Nov. 30, 2012, that some referred to as “Rookie Night.”

"Fortunately, no students were hospitalized or suffered lasting injury," says Glotzbach. "However, the potential for injury was considerable, and the actions themselves inexcusable."

Any athletes found to have participated in the incident will be barred from participation in any spring sport, the school says. Some of the soccer team members also face suspensions for significant portions of the fall season.

The college has forwarded the results of its investigation to the Saratoga Springs Police Department and Saratoga County District Attorney.
