New elementary finally opens in Omaha

Sept. 17, 2013
Gateway Elementary had been scheduled to open during 2011-12, but was beset by construction problems.

The Omaha (Neb.) district has opened Gateway Elementary School--finally. The Omaha World-Herald says the campus was supposed to open in the winter of 2012 to ease crowding at three nearby elementary schools, but construction difficulties delayed the opening by more than 18 months. The school is LEED Silver-certified; its environmentally friendly features include a tank that collects rainwater, geothermal heating and cooling systems, and outdoor teaching gardens.
