Rebuilding begins on Los Gatos school that was slated to close

The Los Gatos (Calif.) Union School District has broken ground for a rebuilt and expanded Lexington Elementary School. The San Jose Mercury News reports that last spring, board members reversed a decision to close the school. The board didn't think the seismic hazards from the nearby San Andreas Fault could be remedied, but it  reversed its decision after state officials affirmed that a new campus could be constructed to withstand a magnitude-8 earthquake.The school's single-story buildings will be demolished and replaced with three two-story buildings and two one-story buildings. Construction is expected to be completed in June 2014.
