University of Maine to eliminate 61 jobs

The University of Maine will eliminate 61 positions in an effort to close its $9.7 million budget gap. In addition to cutting positions, the university will also apply $5.3 million of its savings toward making up the budgetary difference.

Of the eliminated positions, 30 are faculty. All of those positions are currently vacant or will soon become vacant because of retirement and attrition. The remaining 31 eliminated positions are non-faculty and at least five of those will be layoffs.
