California Gov. Jerry Brown has signed legislation that extends provisions regarding student athletes and concussions to those attending private and charter schools.
Existing law spelled out how school districts that offer athletic programs should deal with concussions, but the language did not include private or charter schools.
The law states that if school officials suspect a student has sustained a concussion or head injury, they must immediately remove the player from athletic activity for the remainder of the day. The student cannot resume athletic activity until a licensed health care provider trained in the management of concussions evaluates the student and provides written clearance authorizing a resumption of activity.
