Board spares West Virginia elementary from closing (with Video)

Cabell County board rejects superintendent's recommendation to close Davis Creek Elementary.

The Cabell County (W.Va.) school board has rejected its superintendent's recommendation and has voted to keep the doors open at Davis Creek Elementary in Barboursville.

WSAZ-TV reports that Superintendent William Smith wanted to close the aging Davis Creek campus and move students to the newer Martha Elementary School.

The board, in a 3-to-2 vote, opted to keep the school open.

Now that Davis Creek will continue to house students, the district will have to address facility problems at the school. Officials say the school needs about $250,000 in upgrades, such as replacing the outdated fire alarm system.
