Construction Zone: Cafeteria replacement
With the completion of its new standalone dining court, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind., has replaced the last of its residence hall-based cafeterias.

College dining halls eliminate trays
With rising food and fuel prices, colleges and universities in Ohio, including Case Western Reserve University, Hiram College, John Carroll University, and Oberlin College are following a national trend to reduce food waste and energy by removing cafeteria trays or discouraging their use.

Battling Obesity
At the Gates Chili High School near Rochester, N.Y., the cafeteria and kitchen are getting an overdue overhaul. Debbi Beauvais, the district's food-service supervisor, was reviewing the design plans for the renovation when the architect pointed out where he planned to put the deep fryers.

Campus Comforts
Nearly all of the 2,800 students at St. Olaf College live on the Northfield, Minn., campus all four years they attend the school.

Construction Zone: Modern eatery
The University of Rhode Island (URI), Kingston, recently opened the Hope Commons Dining Hall, an $18 million, 42,500-square-foot facility featuring a 718-seat dining hall, late-night cafe and retail market.

Trends Shaping Housing Design
Living in residence halls can be an integral part of the college experience. Students who not only attend classes on campus, but also live, eat and socialize with fellow students can develop a feeling of community that often can't be found living away from school.

Home Away From Home
Many students are selecting colleges or universities based on a sense of community. Here's how administrators can attract them.
