Despite wide controversy and heated debate, Idaho lawmakers approved legislation that will allow people to carry concealed weapons on college campuses. The measure, which was passed in the Senate last month, was approved 50-19 by the House of Representatives, according to Idaho legislative services.

The bill now has to be signed by Idaho Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter in order to become law.

Idaho law enforcement officials supported the bill, while the education sector was strongly opposed to the bill. All the Idaho college presidents came out against the bill, and one Boise State University professor wrote a controversial op-ed for the New York Times denouncing campus carry.

If signed, the legislation would allow anyone with an enhanced concealed-carry permit in Idaho to carry weapons on campus in all places except dormitories and large public facilities.
