February 2012...from The Joplin Globe: TheJoplin (Mo.) school board has approved preliminary architectural renderings for a new Joplin High School to replace the facility destroyed last year in a tornado. The new school will be three stories tall and built into a hill on the east side of Grand Avenue. Plans include a creek that will run from north to south in the middle of the property. The district expanded its building site with the purchase of 77 properties to the south and west of the former high school. District officials said they risked losing out on millions of federal dollars if they rebuilt the school on its original site, which was in a flood plain. The architects for the new building are DLR Group and Corner Greer & Associates.
