Savings come from eliminating jobs, cutting custodial and transportation spending

From The Chicago Tribune: Chicago Public Schools officials say they will cut $75 million at the district's central office. About $16 million in cuts include getting rid of 40 central office positions that are vacant or soon will be. Twenty employees at the district's headquarters will be laid off. Other budget reductions include scaling back on capital improvement projects to save $44 million in debt service payments; cutting custodial services to saver $7.3 million; and downsizing the district's bus fleet to save $5 million. will be gained from reducing underused space in schools. Despite the cuts, the district's $720 million budget shortfall still looms.
