ACLU sues Mississippi county over student disturbance on school bus

Civil rights group alleges police used excessive force and discriminated based on race

News release: The American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU of Mississippi have accused the Southaven, Miss., police and the DeSoto County school district of assaulting and racially discriminating against a group of schoolchildren riding home on a school bus. The ACLU has filed a federal lawsuit that contends that police officers used excessive and unwarranted force to quell a disturbance among students. The suit alleges that the officers responded to a quarrel on a school bus by arresting a half-dozen black students, choking and tackling a black female student and threatening to shoot the 30 students on the bus between their eyes.
