Alabama governor proposes $850 million for school construction

Riley says money would be distributed to school systems based on enrollment.

Alabama Gov. Bob Riley is proposing that the state issue $850 million in bonds for school construction. In his 2007 State of the State address, Riley says that Alabama's school systems badly need upgraded school facilities. "Too many children still go to schools in disrepair and struggle to learn in overcrowded portable classrooms," he tpld lawmakers. He asked them "to provide our schools with additional resources for new construction, safety improvements and technology upgrades they need." Riley's proposal, which would have to be approved by the legislature, calls for the funding to be distributed to every school system based on school enrollment.
