A federal judge has refused to dismiss a lawsuit that challengesAlabama's property tax system. The suit, filed on behalf of students in Lawrence and Sumter counties' public schools, contends that the system produces the lowest taxes in in the nation and thus is racially discriminatory. The plaintiffs argue that the way Alabama public schools are financed forces local governments to raise school revenues through regressive sales taxes.
