Alaska schoolchildren survive violent bus crash

Bus driver is credited with saving lives after truck veers into bus returning from field trip.

The driver of a pickup truck was killed when his vehicle slammed into a school bus Saturday night in Alaska, but the fifth-graders on the bus escaped without serious injury when bus driver Janet Sayen kept her out-of-control vehicle upright as it careened into a roadside ditch and crashed into a fence. Firefighters say her driving skill almost certainly saved lives. Sayen suffered leg injuries that required surgery. The children were returning from an out-of-town field trip.
