Anchorage schools win approval of bonds
Apr 1, 2008 1:26 PM
Voters in Anchorage, Alaska, have approved a $43.7 million bond request for significant upgrades at two
aging elementary schools and improvements at other school buildings across
the city. One of the schools that will be upgraded--Sand Lake Elementary-- was built in 1958. The second school in line for a major renovation--Chester Valley--was
constructed in the aftermath of the 1964
earthquake. Both schools need significant renewal to meet safety codes
and educational program needs. Projects at other schools will improve
emergency communications, add sprinklers,
replace roofs and heating systems, upgrade electrical systems and
tracks, and improve traffic flow. More than 62 percent of the costs
will be covered by the state.
