From The Springfield State Journal-Register: A dispute with the Illinois Department of Revenue means $7.8 million worth of building repairs in the Auburn School District will have to wait. The school board wanted an April bond election to seek funds for the upgrades, but the dispute has kept the proposal off the ballot. The disagreement stems from whether the district falls under Illinois’ Property Tax Extension Limitation Law, which limits the annual growth of property tax revenue. Auburn is mostly in Sangamon County, which is governed by the tax cap law. However, Auburn officials believe the tax limit no longer applies to the school district because it annexed the Divernon School District four years ago. Part of the former Divernon district lies in Montgomery County, which never approved property tax caps.
