Austin (Texas) district wins approval of $343.7 million bond

Austin (Texas) school district voters have approved a $343.7 million bond package. The passage of bond Propositions 1 and 2 will take care of some of the district's immediate needs, such as projects to relieve overcrowding, replace outdated computers, bring the district into compliance with new state science curriculum mandates and address several maintenance issues deemed critical by district officials. Proposition 3 will pay for a districtwide performing arts facility, land for a new high school in South Austin and renovations to Anderson High School in North Austin.

FROM JANUARY 2008: Several school board members in Austin, Texas, say they may not be willing to move forward on a May bond vote. They are concerned that the district's needs have not been examined thoroughly enough. Their comments came after the district's bond committee recommended a $233.4 million bond vote.
