Between 100 and 200 teachers expected to lose jobs in Kansas City (Mo.) district

Steady decline in enrollment plagues system

For the first time in years, the Kansas City (Mo.) School District is laying off teachers. Union and district officials say that more than 100 and possibly close to 200 teachers received the news in recent days that they’re probably losing their jobs — just weeks before the start of the new school year. The district’s enrollment, which fell to 18,000 last year, is expected to drop below 17,000 in the coming school year. The board approved a budget last month that cut expenditures by $44 million.
