Boston archdiocese plans two school closings

Closings are part of a plan to revitalize remaining schools in Dorchester and Mattapan.

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston, in a bid to reverse the sharp decline in its urban parochial schools, is poised to shutter at least two parish schools while raising more than $50 million in private contributions to rebuild facilities and boost teacher salaries at the schools that remain. Church officials have concluded that they need to close two or three of the eight parish schools in the Dorchester and Mattapan neighborhoods so that the remaining schools have enough students to remain vibrant.
