British firm buys largest U.S. school bus company for $2.8 billion

FirstGroup takes over Laidlaw, which has 41,000 school buses and contracts with more than 1,000 school systems.

Britain's FirstGroup Plc agreed to buy Laidlaw International Inc., owner of the largest U.S. school bus company and the Greyhound bus service, for $2.8 billion. FirstGroup will merge its Ryder U.S. student buses division, acquired in 1999, with Laidlaw's fleet of 41,000 school buses and contracts with more than 1,000 school systems.
