Michigan State plans new art museum

Backed by a $26 million donation from philanthropist and alumnus Eli Broad, Michigan State University has announced plans for a new art museum on its East Lansing campus. The school hopes to break ground on the 42,000-square-foot museum by fall 2008, and construction should be finished by 2010. To determine the new building's design, Joseph Giovannini, an architect and author, is conducting a competition among world-renowned architects. A field of 43 architects has been narrowed to five, and a winner is to be selected by the end of July.
