Buildings, resources lacking at schools in Broward County's minority neighborhoods

Some schools in the African-American neighborhoods of Broward County, Fla., still don't have enough textbooks, proper athletic facilities or up-to-date libraries, according to Citizens Concerned About Our Children, a grass-roots group that sued the school district in 1995 over inequity in facilities, equipment and materials. Many teachers said they don't have enough textbooks to allow students to take them home; the books in many libraries are more than 15 years old; and only 27 percent of district schools comply with federal disability standards.
