California district mulls outsourcing buses

Vista Unified transports 3,000 students a day to and from campus

The Vista (Calif.) Unified school board is considering whether to hire an outside firm to operate the district's transportation department, which is responsible for busing more than 3,000 students to school each day. The district and the union representing about 80 to 90 employees in the transportation department, including bus drivers, are at an impasse in contract negotiations. However, district officials say the contract talks are a separate issue.
