Colleges and universities around the country have taken a second look at their safety policies since Seung-Hui Cho, a student at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, gunned down 32 people and then killed himself on April 16 on the campus in Blacksburg, Va.

EARLIER: A security gap exists at colleges and universities that often isn’t apparent on campus tours. Most universities work hard to keep their campuses safe, but many students live off campus, and the security of those residences is generally not the responsibility of the college. Lighting, locks, patrols and other safety measures are dependent on the landlord, and vary widely by place and neighborhood.
