Detroit group wants to save historic school building

In spite of broken windows and fire damage, the old Cass Technical High School building still is considered an architectural gem that has been an integral part of Detroit history. Built in the 1920s, the 7 1/2 -story building stands empty, abandoned after the new, $127-million Cass Tech opened in 2005. But a group of metro Detroiters is trying to breathe life into the old structure. Group members say they would like to see the building converted into lofts, with possible retail areas and studio space for local artists. There are no specific plans for the building, which is owned by Detroit Public Schools, but the district may have a recommendation by the first part of next year.
