Declining enrollment is blamed for decision to close Loretto High
Loretto High School , an all-girls Catholic school in Sacramento, Calif., is closing its doors after more than 50 years. Officials blamed declining enrollment, changes in the academic landscape and the growing numbers of charter schools and suburban mega-high schools that have siphoned off students. Enrollment at Loretto had fallen to 389 this year, down from 559 students three years ago. Administrators made the decision to close the school – established in 1955 – after only 83 students took the annual placement entrance examination last week.
