Mecklenburg County, N.C., balks at paying school district for building

From The Charlotte Observer: Mecklenburg County, N.C., and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District are fighting over $13.75 million owed to the schools, a dispute that could hold up an uptown development project. The county agreed to buy the district's Education Center, the building that currently houses central office staff. But county officials say the recession and efforts to cut debt means they can't pay immediately. School Superintendent Peter Gorman says the district needs the money soon in order to pay for new office space. They must be out of the Ed Center by December 2010.
