From The Charlotte Observer: The Charlotte-Mecklenburg (N.C.) school district could save up to $9.5 million next year by eliminating busing for about 12,000 magnet students. Cutting bus rides for about 51,000 students who live within 1.5 miles of their schools could save an additional $5 million to $6 million, and revising school start times could save $2 million to $3 million. Some board members raised concerns about cutting busing for students who live close to schools, saying traffic, crime and other issues can create safety hazards.
