Charlotte (N.C.) district reduces dependence on portables

TheCharlotte-Mecklenburg County (N.C.) school district plans to retire 350 of its 1,200-plus mobile classrooms in August, but a construction slowdown could bring the capacity-stretching trailers back into action in a couple of years. Reliance on mobile classrooms grew as district enrollment growth outstripped construction in recent years. Now, with enrollment leveling off and six new schools slated to open in August, the district will be able to reduce its dependence on the portable facilities.
