Charter schools grow, but at a slower rate

Annual survey says number of campuses grew by 9% in 2007-08

More than 4,100 charter schools served more than 1.24 million students in 2007-08, according to The Center for Education Reform's Annual Survey of America's Charter Schools. The report notes that the number of charter campuses increased 9 percent in 2007-08, a lower growth rate attributed to "artificial constraints placed on the market in the form of charter school caps and moratoriums on new schools." The survey also found charter schools receive nearly 40 less funding that other public schools. To read the executive summary of the report, click here. To read the entire report, click here.
