Group doesn’t want decision left in the hands of the next mayor

From The Chicago Tribune: A coalition of parents, community leaders and teachers union officials in Chicago has put together a panel to help identify a new schools chief. The blue-ribbon panel includes Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis, Chicago Principals & Administrators Association President Clarice Berry, and state Reps. Esther Golar and Cynthia Soto, as well as community leaders, parents and teachers. The same group already is on the record in opposition to letting the city’s next mayor, who will take office in May, choose the new CEO for the school system.
NOVEMBER 2010...from The Chicago Sun-Times: Terry Mazany, head of a Chicago community trust that has pumped millions of dollars into Chicago’s public schools, is Mayor Daley's choice to succeed retiring schools chief Ron Huberman. Mazany is a former public school administrator. but he is not the educator union and community leaders have been seeking.

MORE: Terry Mazany is president and chief executive officer of the Chicago Community Trust.

From The Chicago Tribune: Terry Mazany, a philanthropist with a background in education, will run the Chicago Public Schools only until a new mayor takes office in May. But he has plenty to do in that short time. Mazany's top priority will be driving the search for a new chief education officer, a key position that has been vacant since July. Mazany says he will be paid $1 for the short-term job. A former schools administrator in Oakland, Calif., and Detroit, Mazany leads the Chicago Community Trust, a civic foundation that grants more than $100 million to nonprofits annually. He led the Trust's five-year, $50 million effort to improve teaching and administration in the city's schools.
