Transit fare cards could be used to track students in Chicago

Chicago school officials are considering a plan to smart-card technology on students' reduced-fare transit cards to crack down on truancy. The experimental Chicago Transit Authority card, embedded with a computer chip that records trip histories, is designed primarily to ease commuting for students and reduce fraud. A pilot project will run through June and later could be expanded to all Chicago high schools. District administrators say they need to determine the legality of collecting information about students off school grounds before using the transit cards to help deal with truant students.
