The Clark County (Nev.) School District hiring freeze has melted. The Nevada Legislature’s decisions about budget cuts during its special session last month eliminated much of the uncertainty about the district’s finances and enabled the district to resume hiring. Before the legislature met, the district had suspended all hiring, with the exception of teachers for high-need areas such as math and special education.

JUNE 2008: Faced with the likelihood of cutting more than $100 million from its operating budget, the Clark County (Nev.) School District has frozen almost all hiring for the upcoming academic year, leaving it at least 791 teachers short for the school year that starts in August. The number could go up if teachers retire or find other jobs in the next few weeks. A decision on what to do about those vacancies won’t be made until the Legislature and the governor decide how the state will deal with the budget crisis.
