Cleveland recalls most of the teachers it laid off

From The Cleveland Plain Dealer: Nearly three-fourths of the Cleveland teachers who were laid off in June have returned to work or passed on the opportunity. As of this week, the district had recalled 335 of the 546 laid-off teachers. Another 69 teachers declined to come back or failed to show up for meetings with school officials.

MAY 2010...from The Cleveland Plain Dealer: The Cleveland school system will lay off another 64 employees, bringing the total to more than 800. The school board has voted to lay off a group of non-teaching union employees, including secretaries, cooks, cashiers and lunchroom attendants. The cuts will take effect at the end of the school year. Pink slips previously went to 546 teachers, about 120 other teachers union members and 111 principals and assistant principals.


APRIL 2010...from The Cleveland Plain Dealer: The Cleveland school board has approved layoffs for about 10 percent of the district's 8,000 employees. The board voted to lay off 545 teachers and 117 support staff, effective in June. To that were added more than 100 principals and assistant principals.
