Compromise may save historic schoolhouse

A piece of heritage in Harford County, Md., may escape the wrecking ball The county, the town of Bel Air and the school board have reached a compromise that will save at least the oldest portions of the Bel Air Academy and Graded School and still create enough space for improvements at a nearby elementary. Built in 1882, the academy served students for more than 70 years. In the 1950s, the three-story brick schoolhouse and its several additions became the system's administrative headquarters. Vacant since 2006, the building had been scheduled for demolition.
