Critics question campus expansion at San Diego State

Aug. 13, 2007
Groups say proposed development would bring too much traffic.

Three groups that have challenged San Diego State University's expansion plans say the school still is underestimating the project's impact on traffic, neighborhoods and the environment. The city of San Diego, the Del Cerro community and Alvarado Hospital sent letters to the university in response to a draft report on the impacts of its proposed development. The expansion plan would add classrooms, offices, housing, a hotel and an expanded student center by 2025. The critics contend that San Diego State is overestimating the amount of traffic that streets can handle, underestimating the number of cars that development would bring, and dodging responsibility for its share of off-campus road improvements.
