White students make up only 5 percent of Washington, D.C., public schools

More than 200 of the 234 public and charter schools in Washington, D.C., have student enrollments that are more than 90 percent African American or Hispanic. Seven of the schools are majority white, according to a study of racial patterns in school enrollment by researchers at the Brookings Institution, the Urban Institute and the 21st Century School Fund. White children make up 13 percent of the district's school-age population, but make up only 5 percent of public and charter school enrollment.
