Denver board approves turnaround plans for 6 schools

From The Denver Post: The Denver school board has approved turnaround plans for six schools, as well as a host of other reforms. Next school year, Low-performing Lake Middle School will have a new International Baccalaureate program alongside a middle school program run by West Denver Preparatory charter school. The board also voted to close Philips Elementary (moving Odyssey Charter School into its building) and Skyland Community charter, to revamp Northeast Academy, to give P.S. 1 Charter one year to improve and to turn Greenlee K-8 into an elementary school with a comprehensive literacy program.
NOVEMBER 2009: From The Denver Post: Denver Public Schools officials are recommending sweeping changes to some of the district's worst schools and a change in how charter schools operate. District officials want three charter middle schools to become "boundary schools," which means they must accept every child in the neighborhood the schools serve. If the recommendation is approved, the change could silence criticism that charters serve only high-performing students.
