Departing Philadelphia administrator gets generous severance

Budget overseer gets nine months salary despite district's budget woes.

As the Philadelphia School District reeled from the revelation this spring of a huge budget deficit, its chief financial officer and budget overseer quietly resigned. The district agreed to pay her Folasade Olanipekun-Lewis at full salary--$180,000 annually--for an additional nine months, through March 1, 2008. Some parents questioned rewarding Olanipekun-Lewis with a severance package in the face of budget problems.
