The Detroit school system is expected to keep open about a dozen of the 52 buildings originally slated for closure by summer 2008. Officials say the schools to be spared have developed strong plans for saving money and drawing students. The struggling system's closure plan is believed to be the largest single public school closing plan in the nation's history. Officials have said the closures could save the system about $27 million annually, but fewer closed buildings could mean millions of dollars less in projected savings.

UPDATE: Detroit parents and residents will have to wait another two weeks to find out which of the school district's buildings will be shuttered as part of its massive closure plan. Following recent pressure from community groups and the City Council, the district has postponed meetings during which officials planned to outline changes to the closure list. The meeting is rescheduled for March 16.
